Limerick Lake - 2023 News

NEWS UPDATE: March 25, 2024

Looks like a return to normal late March temperatures this week with daytime highs around +5C.  I have heard that after last weeks cold days that there are folks back out on the ice with snowmobiles.  A cottager sent me a security camera screenshot this morning (March 25) that shows the ice still tight to shore and back to bright white in color.  So much for an early ice-out.  It will still probably be early, but not record setting.  April 14th is the 60 year average.

Sayres grocery store in Apsley re-opened today after a fire destroyed the original store several years ago.  Photos posted on-line look like it is a gorgeous new store serving the area.

Half loads are in effect on Limerick Township roads, and both the snowmobile clubs and the ATV clubs are asking ATV riders to please stay off the trails until they firm up a bit.

Some municipalities south of Limerick have implemented fire bans.  Limerick is asking folks to avoid large day time fires, but the normal November through March regulations are in effect through March 31st.

Council meeting on Monday the 18th.  On my way to Council I drove up Sutton Rd. and checked out the Rogers cell tower project.  The tower is complete.  The electronics are currently being installed. Rogers, in conjunction with FOCA will be rolling out a new 100 Mb speed 5G (or 4G LTE depending on what is available in any given area) home internet service particularly for cottagers.  $50 per month, unlimited data, and can be turned on and off monthly with no penalties.  It sounds like you purchase the router so there is no contract.

Unfortunately, Council voted not to join in the "Foodcycler" composting program.  I thought it would be a good way for cottagers to avoid having food trash around between trips to the dump, but Council felt it cost too much for the benefits.  There was a presentation by the local OPP commander providing details on the crime report for the past year.  He stated that there were no alarming trends over the past 5 years in the municipality.  He also reported that the local detachment was up to full strength in manpower.  Council did vote to support a fire suppression sprinkler program.   This involves installing permanent sprinklers on the roof or other tall structures on your property to be used to keep it wet during dry spells.  This must be a new trend in rural "do-it-yourself" fire suppression as there was a similar program covered at the FOCA AGM this spring.  The municipality will be working on a new "CIP" as ordered by the provincial government.  It is a "community improvement plan" and is a strategic plan laying out how we would like to see the municipality grow (or not grow) in the coming years.

Information from FOCA on the Underutilized Housing Tax:

Underused Housing Tax (UHT) Updates

As part of the federal governments Fall Economic Statement released last week, most Canadian corporations, partnerships, and trusts have become “excluded owners” for UHT purposes, and no longer need to file the tax form annually; however, American owners of Canadian seasonal properties are still implicated in the filing requirements.  Additionally, on October 31st, the UHT filing deadline for the 2022 calendar year was extended to April 30, 2024. (Note that filing for calendar 2023 will also be due on that date.)

Trudys General store has been closed since November 2022.  Now for the good news.  Directly across the street to the south there is a new store, St. Ola Station.  The store is located in the previous "Sams Place" restaurant building.  It is open seven days a week with groceries, baked goods, take out prepared foods, Maple Dale cheese, and are now selling garbage bag tags.  They are not a restaurant. They also have a number of automotive lubricants and chemicals in stock.  The owners recently got their LCBO approval and now have beer, wine, and spirits.  They are still working on their MTO approval to sell gasoline, but as of now they do not have fuel.  Nearest fuel is the gas station in Coe Hill.

The dump is open: Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and Holiday Mondays 11AM to 4:30 during winter hours.  Summer hours start May 1.

The Limerick chain of lakes is in fisheries zone 15.  2024 regulations start on page 102 of the MNRF regulations book. Bass season will open on June 22. Lake trout season opened on January 1 and will close September 30. Please remember that the Limerick chain of lakes has a "slot size" for lake trout that MUST be returned to the lake if caught.  It is roughly 16 to 22 inches.
